    Through iAntique, I started chatting with Jim Addie, a collector from Chicago, who travels with his wife, Jo Addie to various antiques shows across the nation.  So when I heard they would be in Phoenix, I asked if they had time for coffee.  Jim suggested we meet at MacAlphines in Phoenix. Frankly, I had never heard of the place, but am always interested in visiting somewhere that makes vintage malts. MacAlphines is located at 2303 N. 8th Street in Phoenix.  You can visit their website at I arrived a little early and didn't waste any time to order a chocolate malt.  I enjoyed watching area business people in there for lunch, even a couple construction workers wandered through. The vintage soda fountain counter and booths highlighted the atmosphere that was spotted with antiques that only added to the place's charm. Soon, Jim and Jo arrived and we talked about the antiques business for almost an hour.  Well, actually, it was Jim and I talking; Jo disappeared until we found her in the antiques shop area talking with the owner. The antiques area was a fun retro mix of items such as: furniture, clothing, jewelry. Reading MacAlpine's history, Barry Goldwater and Frank Lloyd Wright were regulars.  MacAlpines was established back in 1929, back when 7th Street was just a dusty old trail. I'll definately visit again.  Not only for a fun antiquing trip, but the malts are great! Dan

    Today, I was reading an article about how antique malls and stores are becoming more collectibles than antiques.   The article (Collectibles Differ From Antiques, Nancy Russell) offers this explanation: "Because it’s getting harder to find real antiques these days. Sellers want to sell what the public is looking to buy. The majority of shoppers in the nation’s mega antique malls are attracted to the items they loved as kids".   We see that in our mall also. Collectibles, including "new" collectibles are more apparent in many booths and cases. 'New collectibles' might have many definitions. I don't consider reproductions to fall into that category. I think it's more like an item such as a comic book, that is released in limited editions - that become instantly collectible.   Nancy's article also talks about how shoppers are attracted "to the items they loved as kids". Which makes a good point. As we are seeing the age of our shopper decline, they are looking for items that are less than 30 years old.   We're continuing to good sales of furniture and decorator items from the 70's and 80's.   Wouldn't it be interesting to discuss the purchase habits in antique stores/malls between guys and gals? Who buys more? In our mall, the girls may have a slight lead, but the sales of "mantiques" to guys is also strong.   -Dan

      An exciting new documentary series that celebrates fascinating collectors and collections from across North America is coming to the Denver, Colorado area. We're currently looking for collectors who have home-based collection to feature in our series.   About “Collectors” show:   This is our first season of “Collectors.” In each of the 14 episodes, we visit a different city to meet 4 different collectors. The show pays tribute to private collections and the dedicated people who assemble them: anything from rare sports artifacts to vintage salt and pepper shakers, from antique clocks to action figure memorabilia - and everything in between.    "Collectors" is hosted by Andrew Zegers, an appraiser and collector from "Antiques Roadshow Canada." Our first episode showcased a broad range of collections from vintage toys to high-end hats, from all kinds of Wonder Woman memorabilia to several hundred snow globes amassed by actor Corben Bernsen of "L.A. Why is it important to be involved in

The industry has weathered several years of shifting enthusiasm, and several indicators are showing very positive activity in the world of antiques and collectibles. Sales are indicating consumers are buying vintage items not only as collectibles, but for utilitarian purposes. And antique stores are full of items Made In America; and people are buying more solid items and less from the disposable products culture.

Your involvement, means: (1) you are taking positive steps to rebuild the romance with antiques; (2) showing others your business in working to be more involved in the online world and part of an online community. Youll also be networking with other antique businesses that understand the need to be involved in the virtual world.

If you run an antiques business, you should understand that sharing your ideas, thoughts and tips to operating your business with others isnt revealing secrets, its broadening the abilities of others in your industry. The more places working to revitalize the antiques market is good for every store around.

We encourage strong outreach to younger antique collectors. The future involves reaching new customers and collectors. By taking your business outside your walls, you are able to reach a new group of people that may not have ever been to your store.

Remember, the new collectors of today, can be the antiques dealers of tomorrow.

What can do in your antique mall or shop:
1. Increase enthusiasm with your antique dealers. For the most part, other than occasional sales; the daily activity in the antiques business is pretty basic. Start a few new activities and see interest start to grow.

The time is ripe for the rebirth of excitement to this industry. Weve seen it happen already.
2. In antique malls, dealer enthusiasm seems to equal better merchandise from the dealers.

3. What benefit is making short videos in our store / mall ? This is actually one of the more fun activities. We found that just making the videos, grabs peoples attention. Youll be asked What are you doing?, Whats it for, Where can I see it? Collectors love seeing what other people collect. Plus, with the popularity of social networking, people are spending more time on the Internet looking at topics they are interested in.

We've found that doing a combination of booth tour videos, item specific videos and even workshops generates a lot of interest.

4. Schedule a live event to broadcast from your store. Have a camera-friendly collector to give a ten or fifteen minute talk on what they collect.

5. Begin listing items in the classifieds. See the attached information about how to list items with the best success.

6. Create a few booth tour videos each week. Find that on-camera person that is knowledgeable and enjoys talking about antiques. Dont forget to create these videos during business hours - customers love to see things happening.
