Rule 9 Beauty Lies Not in the Eye of the Beholder

  • At the end of each year that iAntique has been in operation, I put forth a "rule" or suggestion for antique dealers to follow. We've just concluded our 9th year, and so here goes Rule #9: Beauty Lies Not in the Eye of the Beholder. Beauty, ie. value lies in the verdict of the marketplace. Dealers don't get to choose what something is worth. Their success as dealers lies in being able to understand how the marketplace values antiques. This rule is close to Rule #4 Never Buy What You Like, because if you do, you will often overpay and then try to sell at higher than market prices. In other words, collectors often fail as dealers. As usual, I expect some pushback, but whatever your opinion I always value other people's ideas. Hope you enjoy the program!
