Unknown silver set

    Hi Jennie, Could you please upload the mark--the word "sterling" & any other marks--any other marks may be small & they may be just a letter. Thanks. Gary

    Jennie, Thanks very much for uploading the photos & for the info that the mark is "V.L." That tells us that the maker was Vincent Lollo of Brooklyn, NY. His company was well known as a maker of sterling silver salt & pepper shakers, which is what you have. I don't know the exact dates of his firm, but he was certainly in business from the 1920's to the '50's. I think that your set dates from the '20's and possibly earlier. The spoon was for dishing the salt, which was kept in the dish. The shaker was for the pepper. People also used the sets for spices, such as ground cinnamon and netmeg. Vincent Lollo does not have the reputation of, say, Tiffany, and the sets were sold in department stores. I would say that in today's market your set is worth about $75. Gary
