Gary & Carol Stover Great post & great blog, Daye. Very nice to see you back on the site. I also use blacklight to see search for recent inpaintings on works of art & painted furniture. Gary

Daniel Briddle I wonder how many beginning dealers don't recognize the importance of having black light with them?

Daye Salander Thanks Gary. It's good to be here
That makes perfect sense Gary. Black light tells a part of the story that is not visible to the naked eye.
A lot Dan! In fact, until someone has and uses a black light, they have no clue what they are missing. An...  more

    Less Antiques In Antique Stores?

Claude Leaman Dan I have the said same thing for many years. People buy what they remember as children. In the 1930's Victorian furniture was reproduced and I often wondered why. It was what young adults remembered from their childhood, so manufacturers obliged. I...  more

Janet Fields That is because all the flea markets are antique sellers now. We travel all over and your correct most of the the Antiques Malls have new things, and crafts. Drives me nuts. I like rules....................

Zendelle Bouchard I don't have a problem with vintage collectibles in antique malls. I sell both antique and vintage items. But I would prefer to keep the new stuff and crafts to a minimum. It just waters down the "cool old stuff" vibe too much.

Kay Vanderploeg I think styles have changed, the kids who grew up with 'country clutter' in the '80's and '90's want a lighter, more spacious look. Another thing I've noticed is that picking up a collectible from their childhood doesn't mean they are collectors. They...  more

Ray Clevenger I think that Nintendo Collectors are a great example of this change towards "new collectables". I wonder what else I should be stock piling for feature collectors....

Carolyn O'Bayley Great tips Daye....I especially like the Q-tip idea...anyone who says they can tell bakelite by smelling it has some sniffer glands I don't have..

Jane Dominick This was a great article. I am going to put my "kit" together today. Thank you!

Daye Salander This weekend at the swap meet I had a chance to several times use my q-tips on suspected bakelite pieces. One test yes, the other no. Interesting enough the person selling was saying...yeah, I want $15 for that box coz it's bakelite. When I questioned...  more

Carolyn O'Bayley Good for you Daye..I still need to do that...I'm such a trusting soul....I didn't have my kit and bought a piece only to get it home and discover it wasn't...thank goodness there is not a lot of money invested...
    • Daye Salander
Jane Dominick Well, I haven't put this kit together yet but I do still plan to. We all need more hours in the day I think.

It saddens me to realize the lost of beautiful and rare things by not packing well and solidly.

Sorry such a lovely piece was damaged.

Acorn Hill Antiques So sorry to hear of the damage. I shared some shipping tips also on the blog section- "Shipping 101". We have had some pretty damaged pieces as well because of people skimping with suppies or just palin ignorance.

Daye Salander I think sometimes people forget that selling online is great fun but also takes work and making sure things arrive safely is truly important!

Claude Leaman It is now called the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. 2 separate countries. They are both famous for their glassware and porcelains.Although there is a lot of "cheaper" items being exported from there.

Claude Leaman Is working now. Bob, you can over time spend a LOT of money on books and you will find there is always one more that you need. While they are not always accurate on price, they are accurate on description and are often much handier and quicker that the internet .

Colm O'Leary Thanks Bob, looks like a great site to find those hard to get books.
And of course, I did find a book I liked, checked the prices on the other sites, found it on special with Amazon. And, of course, when I was on there I saw two more books that looked...  more
