Antique Mexican Retablos

  • We're now uploading our programs as soon as they're edited, so please watch the website & search youtube for new programs. In this week's show I'll discuss antique Mexican retablos. These oil paintings on tin of religious subjects were hung in houses, often as a way of giving thanks to a particular Saint, who, in the minds of the believers interceded on behalf of the family. The works are charming and evocative. They remind me of Pre-Renaissance Italian paintings. They have a genuineness similar to hand crafted antiques. You want to touch them, and I think that family members did touch them often. Hope you enjoy the program, and please let me know what you think. Gary
